Default mail hangs on send/receive

I have this intermittent problem: users download messages when outlook opens,
and it stops responding on a message, the only way out is to end outlook with
task manager.

If I then open outlook safe mode, all messages come in. this started
happening shortly after last patch tuesday, randomly amongst users.

Thanks in advance for any help
