Default Trying to add ex-Directory mailbox to user profile

Using MS Outlook 2003 on Windows XP SP1, the servers (I think use Exchange
2000) use corporate Active Directory to authenticate users. It is not a
native Server 2003 setup, but a mix of Win2000, Win2003.
I can add the normal user or team mailboxes to the outlook profile; but
cannot add the ex-Directory one to the profile. How can this be done?

Can you be more specific about what you mean by "the ex-Directory mailbox"? That's not an Exchange concept that I've heard of before.

By that, I mean that within my company we have normal user mailboxes,
functional account mailboxes & group account mailboxes, all of which appear
in the Global Address List; and some "EX-Directory" mailboxes which do not
appear in the GAL. After getting a response from my tech support people, it
would appear that they "unhide" the account for 15 minutes, so the name can
be resolved for setting up the mailbox in the mail profile, then they "hide"
it again. It allows some of the senior managers to have email accounts
without being subject to the vagaries of us mere mortals. They may have a
normal email account on the GAL which is dealt with by a PA, which everyone
can see, and the *important* stuff being passed into their XD account by the
PA. A live "junk" filter.

You've already found the solution, then. The mailbox can't be added until it is unhidden.
