We are running Outlook 2003 with Exchange 2003. When we have Outlook
configured to use "Play a sound" notification and multiple messasges are
recieved with a short period (about 1 minute), the sound is only played for
the first message. After about a minute has passed, the sound will play
again, but not for the next minutes worth of messages. I am not looking for
a fix as much as I am an explanation for users.

I think the process that looks for new messages and plays a sound (or
displays the new mail notification in the system tray) runs only
periodically, and that period is greater than one minute. Thus, if multiple
messages arrive at one time or close to each other, the polling for new
messages will notice them all at once.
