Default Cannot open outlook

When I try to open outlook it said (first time) that there were no identities
and directed me to the Manage identities dialog. Since then, when I try to
open outlook it takes me straight to the manage identities dialog.

There are no identities in the list, and clicking on 'properties' does
nothing.

Clicking on new opens the 'new identity' dialog. I can type in my name and
click OK at which point it gives me the choise of switching to the new
identity now. If I click yes it says "The current identity could not be
changed because one of the applications was unable to switch". If I click no
it returns me to the manage identities dialog, but nothing has been added to
the list. I'm basically back to the start.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
