Hi all,
I'd like to give outlook 2007 a try. However the install program says it cant be installed side by side with any other version of outlook (why?). Is there any trick way around this? if not, will i be able to go back to 2002 without loosing any emails or anything? thanks Ian |

The reason why is the way that it registers itself to the system (basically
a bunch of core stuff that deal with the messaging subsystem). There is no trick or method to get around the fact that only 1 version of Outlook can be installed. Considering that the beta of Office 2007 is coming to a close, I would wait until Microsoft releases a finalized copy of the product to try. However if you don't wish to listen to this advice, the answer to your last question is yes, you can upgrade/install the new version and use your existing PST files. When you go to uninstall the new version in order to go back to the old, you can. The only thing you have to be careful of when using the new version is to not use the PST file format. It is not backward compatible. "Ian" wrote in message ups.com... Hi all, I'd like to give outlook 2007 a try. I would wait but i dont know that the company is going to pay for the
upgrade and i'm certainly not going to pay for it. WIll there be a trial version? Anyhow, i'm a bit confused by your last bit of advice. You said 2007 should use the PST file from 2002, but then you said if i want to be able to go back to 2002 that i shouldnt use the PST file format ... how can i use the PST file from 2002 without using the PST file? ![]() or do you mean 2007 has a new PST format and i have a choice of upgrading the PST file to that new format or keeping the old format? thanks Ian neo [mvp outlook] wrote: The reason why is the way that it registers itself to the system (basically a bunch of core stuff that deal with the messaging subsystem). Haven't heard if Microsoft plans on offering a limited trial version, just
know that the launch for "business" is slated for the end of this month. Yeah, I need to learn to proof read before clicking send. Yes, Outlook 2003 & 2007 offer a new PST file format that is not compatible with earlier versions. When you go to create new PST files in either version, you just need to make sure you pick the Outlook 97/2002 flavor in the user interface. (Neither converts old format to new. Always requires creating a new PST file and then copying/importing in from old format) "Ian" wrote in message ups.com... Ah ok i think i got it.
I think maybe i'll try installing the beta version anyhow, since it seems my mail is all sitting on the exchange server and not in a pst file. So if i dont like it (or it expires) i can just uninstall 07 and reinstall 02 thanks for the help Ian neo [mvp outlook] wrote: Haven't heard if Microsoft plans on offering a limited trial version, just know that the launch for "business" is slated for the end of this month. oh well...looks like i cant use outlook 2007. It installed ok (so it
seems) but when i start it, it pops up a window saying its importing my settings and then shuts down with an error: cannot start microsoft outlook. cannot open the outlook window. the set of folders cannot be opened. The resource that you are trying to use is located on an unsupported version of micrsoft exchange. Whats really annoying is that it doesnt even give you a choice of NOT importing settings and letting you try to manually set them. I guess outlook is not compatible with all versions of exchange. Oh well...now i get to find out if the uninstall works ![]() ian neo [mvp outlook] wrote: Haven't heard if Microsoft plans on offering a limited trial version, just know that the launch for "business" is slated for the end of this month.
