Default 'edit messages in word' unchecks itself!

Using Office 2003. When I check the tick box for 'use word to edit messages'
it seems to uncheck itself several times a day. When it is unchecked (and
not using word 2003) I get a message when trying to write a new email telling
me I can't run active x controls becuase of my security settings! My
signature is just formatted text though.
