Default Desktop folders won't open after Outlook profile set

I have installed Outlook 2002 on my laptop running XP.
After I configure OL with a new profile, close OL, I can't open a file on my
desktop.
I can't open the Control Panel through StartControl Panel, can't open My
Computer shortcut, any of my folders. I have tested twice. I had to do a
System Restore to get access, but of course lose the OL profile/settings. Any
ideas on what
may be the problem?

Thank you.
