I am hoping to connect to the exchange server from home through outlook, but
the people from work say it is either impossible or they don't know how to do
it. We have web access to email, but I can not see my calendar or access my
contacts list for my pda. The functionallity of web access is very limited
versus through the exchange server when I am at work.

They're the only ones who can set it up. You should be able to see the
folders in your Exchange mailbox with OWA. There's no way you'll not be
able to see your calendar if your delivery location is the mailbox.
