I am running XP Home SP 2 (fully current for updates) I am using Outlook
2003 and IE7. I am missing "URL:MailTo Protocol" from the list of file types under Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/Programs. I believe this missing item is the cause of the following problem: Since installing IE7, whenever I click a mailto link in a web site I get the message, "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is ot properly installed." When I clear the dialogue box, about 10 blank windows headed "Outlook (not responding)" tile across the screen. I can't get to Task Manager. I have to turn off the computer to regain control. MS Knowledg Base Article 312346 addresses this error message, but in the context of clicking a mailto link in Outlook, rather than in IE7,: SYMPTOMS When you click a mailto link on a Web page in Microsoft Outlook, a new mail message window does not open. Instead, you may receive the Outlook Inbox or one of the following error messages: The command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are using. Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed. . For Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, follow these steps: a. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. b. On the File Types tab, click URL:MailTo Protocol, and then click Advanced. c. Under Actions, click Open, and then click Edit. d. If you are running Microsoft Outlook 2002 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, type the following text under Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1" If you are running Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, type the following text under Application used to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1" e. Click OK two times Of course, I can't click on URL:MailTo Protocol, because I am missing it. Any suggestions? Bill Pine |
