Default How do I stop getting default mail client error message?

I have recently purchased a new Vista laptop & have transferred my settings &
files from my old XP laptop to my new ;aptop.
All of my files have transferred correctly. However, I keep getting error
messages saying "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail
client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook
and set it as the default mail client"
I have checked & it is set as the default mail client.
I am also being asked for my mail account passwords each time I log in -
even though I have entered them in the accounts.
I am using Outlook 2003.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
