Default Installed Outlook 2000 Startup Problems

I'll try to give as much info as I can about my computer as I can. It's an
older computer, PIII, running Windows XP which is up to date on the suggested
updates and security patches, running Office 2000 SB which is apparently
running all the suggested updates from Microsoft. Internet is cable.
Anti-virus is McAfee 10.

The problems I have developed in the last two weeks (and aggravating me
totally):
First, when Outlook 2000 opens, a dialogue box opens 'C:\documents &
settings\myname\application data\Microsoft|Addins\' is not a valid Office
add-in. If you don't clear it by clicking "OK" the procesof opening stalls.
Second, Outlook opens, connects to the mail server and indicates that mail is
present, but when I click on the "Inbox" to get the mail it takes 2-3 minutes
to get the indicated mail to appear. Doesn't matter if the file is photos or
just a few lines of text; the wait is extraordinarily long, much longer than
is was before my final set of Microsoft updates.

Out of frustration I brought up "task manager" while opening Outlook 2000.
It indicates 2 instances of Outlook 2000 opening alternately "running" and
"not responding" until the Inbox appears, then one disppears. And the
program works fine.

Help

Make sure you disable the email scanning feature.

With Outlook closed, go to the (hidden) folder %UserProfile%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and delete the file extend.dat.

Brian, What was the deletion of the file supposed to accomplish? Neither
situations I outlined have been addressed.

You disabled/uninstalled the email scanning both in OL and McAfee?

The email scanning feature in both McAfee and Norton can cause similar
problems

Thanks for your input Brian, but the error message still appears.

I have also discovered I am opening two copies/versions of Outlook when I
click on any Outlook icon. That's why it takes so long to load the program;
it appears to be a toss-up in the computer which becomes the final program on
the monitor; the layouts are different and the final open program varies.
Also, a message read and delete on one still may come up later as new when
the other version becomes primary. Any idea where to correct this problem?

Start with a new mail profile. Exactly how, though, depends on whether
you've installed Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail Only or Corporate/Workgroup
mode. The second line of HelpAbout will tell you if you don't know.
