In an upgrade it either creates a new 'empty' pst (email/contacts data) or
uses your old one. It doesnt destroy your old data - though anythings
possible with a PC
In OL FileOpenData File...browse to any other data file, or if the
origonal data file is not in the default location search for *.pst to
include hidden files, then browse to that location.
Once your old data file is open within OL copy the data from this to the new
data/empty file - do NOT import - then close the old data file.
OL2003 uses a new format data file, it is more robust than the earlier
version, but it is not readable by earlier version OL

Because both Import/Export, when used in conjunction with a pst *can* lead
to data loss.
There is no problem using these on other format files, eg Excel, csv etc
