G'day all,
Is it possible to get any kind of New Mail Notification for ALL valid messages (wait for it...) but only AFTER all rules or filters have been processed? My problem is that because of my "visibility" on various fora, I get between 200 and 600 fraudulent emails sent to legitimate (and illegitimate) recipients in my domain every day. Using the SpamBayes tool (thanks due to Sue Mosher!), I can now eliminate more than 99.9% of these, but Outlook still continually calls the New Mail Notification every time any mail of any kind is delivered into the inbox - which is utterly useless, since 98% of these emails are immediately moved, either by the spam filters or other rules I have active. And I need to be notified audibly when new mail arrives, I just don't want to be notified that spam has arrived, then when I check the inbox, there's no new messages. It's truly frustrating. I've bought and read Sue's terrific book on Outlook Programming, but I can't find the right mechanism described in the examples or function lists, and I think it might not be as straight-forward as I'm assuming. I can turn on the notification for messages that meet specific criteria - but to identify new messages in the inbox AFTER all the rules have been processed is not as easily done as I'd hoped. My closest success in scripting ended up notifying me of the same messages every time the server was polled, even if no new mail was received. I could only get that working properly if I moved ALL the inbox messages out of the inbox (and yes, I tried doing an "automated move" to a new folder to bypass this, and I ended up in terrible trouble). I understand that I can use the rules and actions triggers or the CDO functions and/or scripts to call whatever notification I want, but I don't seem to be able to find an easy or robust way to only notify me when ANY new, VALID mail arrives in my inbox - i.e. AFTER all the various filters and rules have been processed. I can easily get this working if I know the sender - but in many cases I don't, so rules based on known senders won't work, and especially not in the increasingly large number of cases where the sender's header has been spoofed to be me! I also realise that maybe this isn't ever going to be possible given the way Outlook is designed, but if it is, can anyone help to figure out a way to do it? I'd be happy to use an add-in or other tool if it's available... I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person in the Outlook world who's annoyed by continual email notifications for unwanted messages, nor for messages that then immediately trigger other rules and get whisked out of the inbox! I'm happy to post any successes here to help anyone else. Thanks and regards, PCPete -- Data is not Information; Information is not Knowledge; Knowledge is not Wisdom. |
