I asked the question the wrong way.....How can I save the old email? What I
did was
to take the old pst file and rename it, then saved it to mey desktop.
uninstalled 2003 and then reinstalled it. Had to destroy the new outlook.pst
file and replace it with my
file. then it seemed to work ok????

That was unnecessary, uninstalling OL doesnt impact on your data files or
profile.

Uninstalling OL is rarely neccessary to cure a problem, and usually doesnt

You probably corrupted your mail profile doing it that way. See this:

You wouldn't have needed to do anything with the old .PST file. The
re-install would have created a new .PST, but wouldn't have touched the old
one. The most you should have had to do was re-connect Outlook to the old
data file. The thing NOT to do is overwrite the .PST created with the
re-install; doing so will probably corrupt your Outlook profile. If in
doubt, create a new profile, start Outlook, and connect it to the old .PST
file using 'File|Open|Outlook Data File'.
