This error message appears when I try to start Outlook - "Unable to open your
default e-mail servers. Could not open the item. Try again."

Outlook will not start. I have tried reinstalling Office XP several times,

Any one know how I can fix it?

Use the Mail applet in Control Panel to repair your mail profile and point
it at the correct folder file.

Default After reinstalling Office XP Outlook has missing files?

Hi --

Thank you for your response.

I am sorry I was too brief in my problem explanation. I had installed Office
2007 and did not like the way it worked. So I removed it and installed Office
XP Pro. I am running Windows XP on my PC.

In reading the responses to my problem, I went to Mail in the Control Panel
and found that the Outlook.pst file that was there appears to be from Office
2007 and is not compatable with OfficeXP pro. I removed the Outlook.pst file
with hopes that a reinstall of OfficeXP would replace it. It did not.

So now my probem appears to be -- where do I find the correct Outlook.pst
file for OfficeXP Pro?

Thanks again for your help.

It's wherever you had created it. Installing (or uninstalling) Outlook
doesn't touch the PSTs. If you do not explicit choose a folder for the PST,
Outlook will choose
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Installing
Outlook 2007 usually creates a new PST whose name is Outlook.pst.
Installing Outlook 2002 typically does not. If you're lucky, open the
default location and you'll find an Outlook.pst and and Outlook(1).pst, the
latter of which should be the new PST, unless you deleted it. Modify your
mail profile using the Mail applet in Control Panel to include the correct
PST. If you see no other PSTs there, I'd say there's a better that even
chance you deleted the old one.

Default After reinstalling Office XP Outlook has missing files?

Hi -- Thanks for your response.

I had not removed Office XP Pro prior to installing Office 2007.

I installed Office 2007 after replacing the hard drive. So Outlook XP had
not been installed prior to this.

After looking at the mail setting today there was only one Outlook.pst file
and OutlookXP said this pst file was not compatiable. It was the only one
there. I tried to build a new personal data file, but it doesn't contain the
Inbox and outbox files etc.

I did a complete reinstall of officeXP after deleteing the non-compatible
Outlook.pst file, but the reinstall did not create a new Outlook.pst file --
now there is no Outlook.pst file.

I think what I need to find is the default Outlook.pst file for OfficeXP --
but I don't know where it is if the OfficeXP Pro install doesn't create one.

Thanks again,

Bob

Of course not. That happens only if you set that PST to be the delivery
location. Then Outlook will populate it with all the default folders. A
fresh Outlook 2002 PST contains only the Deleted Items folder by default.

I did a complete reinstall of officeXP after deleteing the non-compatible
Outlook.pst file, but the reinstall did not create a new Outlook.pst
file --
now there is no Outlook.pst file.

And there won't be unless you create one. In Control Panel, double-click
the Mail applet. Click the Data Files button and then click Add to create a
PST. It sounds, though, that you did create a PST with Outlook 2002. Just
use the Data Files button, then Add to browse to that PST you said you
created when you "tried to build a new personal data file". Select it and
click OK. Now click the E-mail Accounts button in the Mail applet, select
"Add a new e-mail account", click Next and in the "Deliver new e-mail to the
following location" drop-down at the lower left, select the PST you added.
This will make it the delivery location and when Outlook starts it will
populate that PST with all the default folders.

Using the mail applet you add a data file
Unless you previously ran OutlookXP there will be no other data file (other
than your 2007 pst)

Hi --Thanks for your reply.

I must be really dense but somehow, I can't make a defaul Outlook pst file
that will work. It only makes personal files. There is no inbox or outbox
etc..

I think I need to find out how to get a replacement Outlook.pst default file
for OfficeXP I don't seem to be able to create one from scratch.
