I replaced my Win98 client with an XP Pro box. The server is running NT4 and
the mail server is running Exchange 5.5. I installed Outlook 2000 and configured it the same way it had been on the Win98 machine but I can't send any mail to an internet mailbox. I can send mail to other mailboxes on our network but nothing outside. Outlook will receive internet mail or from within the shop. I tried Outlook Express which has no trouble sending internet email. When I initially launched Express I had it to use the same settings I have setup for Outlook and it worked with no changes. What needs to be done? Any help appreciated. Bob |

Your post doesn't add up. Outlook Express cannot make Exchange account
connections so you either are not using an Exchange account connection in Outlook as well or you are using an alternative protocol like POP3 or IMAP. Is the Exchange server itself configured to route the messages to the Internet or not? Did you install Outlook 2000 in Workgroup/Corporate mode or in Internet Mail Only mode? You're probably aware of this already, but things are very outdated in your scenario. -- Robert Sparnaaij [MVP-Outlook] Coauthor, Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook FAQ, HowTo, Downloads, Add-Ins and more http://www.msoutlook.info/ Real World Questions, Real World Answers ----- "rowiga" wrote in message ... Thanks Roady,
I installed Outlook using corporate/workgroup mode. I really don't know if Exchange is setup to send internet mail. The only thing I do know is that with no changes made to Exchange, the Win98 box worked and this XP Pro box won't. We don't have an IT department here and I'm the lucky one assigned to iron these kinds of things out. My troubleshooting skills normally consist of things like when my car stops on the highway I lift the hood to see if the giant on/off switch fell into the "off" position. I know that our setup is antiquated. When I bought this XP Pro box and called Dell they sent me to Microsoft who sent me back to Dell who sent me back to Microsoft who referred me to The Geek Squad who doesn't want anything to do with it. At least we finally got rid of those messy stone tablets and chisels. I wasn't saying that Express is making Exchange connections. I was just trying Express to see if I could send internet mail from this client in some fashion in an attempt to try to narrow the cause down. Which it did. Alright, let me pick my brain here ;-)
First let us determine if Exchange actually can send to the Internet. On a domain client which is local to the Exchange server, try to send a message to a non-internal address (like your private address you use at home or a Hotmail address) via OWA (Outlook Web Access) and see if that arrives. If so, your Exchange is configured correctly to send to the Internet. If not, you probably had an additional account configured on the Windows 98 box which did send to the Internet. Do you still have that box? If so, look up the settings for the account. If you can't send to the Internet while Exchange is configured to send to the Internet; what error do you get when you try? -- Robert Sparnaaij [MVP-Outlook] Coauthor, Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook FAQ, HowTo, Downloads, Add-Ins and more http://www.msoutlook.info/ Real World Questions, Real World Answers ----- "rowiga" wrote in message ... All of the clients on the domain that have Outlook 2000 installed can send
internet email (except this XP Pro client). They run Win95, Win98 and Win2000. I believe that all of the account settings from the Win98 box that I'm replacing are the same in the XP Pro box. I will set it back up again and check each setting. My first failure was having email sit stubbornly in the outbox like my 26 year old daughter who doesn't want to leave home. As an added note, I did have to set up a new user account for this box because the person that set the network up initially gave us all user names like "deputy.dawg". So now my user name is just deputydawg. I then associated this new NT user account to the Exchange mailbox that I was using with the Win98 box. Now the email leaves the outbox only to vanish out in cyberspace. I don't get any error message(s) and the email never gets delivered. A copy is saved in the Sent Items folder. But does it work when you use OWA?
I don't really understand why you had to create a new user account. Don't you have the Windows XP machine joined to the domain? Then you can directly login with your domain user account. -- Robert Sparnaaij [MVP-Outlook] Coauthor, Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook FAQ, HowTo, Downloads, Add-Ins and more http://www.msoutlook.info/ Real World Questions, Real World Answers ----- "rowiga" wrote in message ...
