Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

I am trying to create an office install that will automatically setup the
users Outlook profile to connect to our Exchange server (Chlcl0203) using the
user's logged on name on the computer - %USERNAME%. The MST file is working
partly because only Outlook is installing in the installation as I have set
it that way.(see below). The problem is the Exchange profile never does get
created. It's like it just skips that part and always puts default in the
profile name and you have to manually set it up. Nothing automates for the
mailbox and user..

This will be very detailed so you can hopefully can help me!

For the last 6 hours I have been trying to make a transform file work
correctly for an office 2003 std package on a Windows XP sp2 box. We have
Exchange clustered on a box with the cluster name chlcl0203 with the server
name being chlsnt002. I have created an administrative installation
directory using setup /a at the command prompt from our Office 2003 standard
edition CD where a volume license is required. I copied the entire cd to a
directory and ran
setup /a "c:\office2003\std11.msi" from the command prompt.

I have read every article I can get my hands on. I have asked others in my
organization for help and they say It should work. Others in my organization
have done this saying "its easy" They say what I am doing should work, but
does not

Please take a look at this and see if you can help me!!!

Using the custom installation Wizard for Office 2003, I have used the
following parameters. To avoid confusion, I will tell you screen by screen.

2. \\uscpf016\installs$\MSOffice2003\STD11.MSI
3. \\uscpf016\installs$\MSOffice2003\CoosaPinesFinal. MST
4. \\uscpf016\installs$\MSOffice2003\CoosaPinesFinal. MST
5. Default installation - ProgramFiles\Microsoft Office
Org name - Bowater
6. Default Setup Behavior is selected
7. I have deselected Excel, power Point and word and everything else to run
from the computer.
8. Configure Local Machine is selected, I put in the product key, I
selected Accept license
9. Do Not customize is selected, Migrate user settings is not! (I have
tried both ways)
10 - 16 I accept default for ease of configurations.
17 Modify Profile is selected. (per all documentation I have read)
18 Configure and Exchange Server Connection is selected
username %USERNAME%
Exchange Server : CHLCL0203 (do I need to put chlsnt002 or
chlcl0203.bowater.com?)
Overwrite Existing is selected.
Do not configure Cache is selected
19 Customize Additional Outlook Profile is selected
Deliver new mail to the following location : EXCHANGE SERVER is
selected
20 Lotus and Microsoft Mail are selected to delete
21 Convert PAB is selected
Customize Outlook Email Defaults is selected
Default email editor is Outlook
Default Format is HTML
22 Do not configure Send/Receive settings is selected.
23 All users is the only one I have played with I have set it to 1, 2 and
Clear. Nothing changes.
24. Finish.

Help, please, this does not work and I need it to work.
Thanks a ton for your help and patience.

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

Quick question: Why are you using "modify profile" instead of "create new profile"?

18 Configure and Exchange Server Connection is selected
username %USERNAME%
Exchange Server : CHLCL0203 (do I need to put chlsnt002 or
chlcl0203.bowater.com?)

The Exchange server name needs to be resolvable and point to a server that is available.

Because that is how I interpreted all the documentation I read.

Is this wrong?

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

I read a couple of other postings that you responded to and what i gathered
was this:

1. If you attempted the install and it did not work, then deleting the
profile and coming back to test the same account leaves registry entries,
something to do with first run. This causes problems with building the
profile?

2. I thought that it was recommended to use Modify profile for the systems
for first time users logging into the system. If I use New Profile, it
prompts me for a profile name. WIll this overwrite the excahnge profile
setup with the MST file? I need to have each profile set up with the
%username% name.

1) Once you have already run setup on a machine, you should use the Custom Maintenance Wizard, not the Custom Installation Wizard, to deploy the mail profile information and other settings.

2) You should be able to use either New Profile or Modify Profile. You specify the name of the profile you want to create in the CIW/CMW. The account setup is identical.

Did you check whether the server name is resolvable by trying it in a manual profile setup?

Using the custom installation Wizard for Office 2003, I have used the

from the computer.

20 Lotus and Microsoft Mail are selected to delete
21 Convert PAB is selected

22 Do not configure Send/Receive settings is selected.
23 All users is the only one I have played with I have set it to 1, 2 and

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

This statement tells you where the CIW places the PRF file that Outlook will use to set up the mail profile:

+ OCW_Added_Outlook_File_1 [INSTALLLOCATION]\custom11.prf

So, before you run Outlook, look to see if there is indeed a custom11.prf file in the Office directory.

These are the statements that set the necessary registry values to (a) tell Outlook its in a first-run condition and (b) tell Outlook where to find the PRF file:

OCW_Added_Content_OutFirstRunNoDash 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup FirstRun #x0000000000000000 OCW_Added_Content_UP
+
OCW_Added_Content_OutFirstRunWithDash 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup First-Run #x0000000000000000 OCW_Added_Content_UP
+
OCW_Added_Content_OutImportPrf 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup ImportPRF [INSTALLLOCATION]custom11.prf OCW_Added_Content_UP

So, you might want to double-check those registry values before you run Outlook for the first time.

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

Sue, I've read your postings. I guess I'm a little confused and maybe you
can help clear things up.

1. If I install Office for the first time, I have to use the CMW after
that? Even if I delete the installation of Office and all profiles of users?

2. I looked for those settings below in the registry. I found none of
them. What Hkey groups are they in?

3. If I install Outlook standard, no PRF files, then do a CMW file, will it
then modify all the profiles to use the %username% profile setup?

"Sue Mosher [MVP-Outlook]" wrote:

MST

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

1. If I install Office for the first time, I have to use the CMW after
that? Even if I delete the installation of Office and all profiles of users?

No, if you completely delete the Office installation and all mail profiles and all user settings from the registry, then you'd have a clean install and would want to use CIW to start the deployment process from scratch.

2. I looked for those settings below in the registry. I found none of
them. What Hkey groups are they in?

You should see them in each user's HKCU hive, but you might also check HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT

3. If I install Outlook standard, no PRF files, then do a CMW file, will it
then modify all the profiles to use the %username% profile setup?

That's my recollection. Worst case is that you'd need to invoke the .cmw file in each user's login script.

You might find the white paper "Configuring Outlook Profiles by Using a PRF File" at http://office.microsoft.com/search/r...60 I&respos=3 worth reading.

This statement tells you where the CIW places the PRF file that Outlook will use to set up the mail profile:

+ OCW_Added_Outlook_File_1 [INSTALLLOCATION]\custom11.prf

So, before you run Outlook, look to see if there is indeed a custom11.prf file in the Office directory.

These are the statements that set the necessary registry values to (a) tell Outlook its in a first-run condition and (b) tell Outlook where to find the PRF file:

OCW_Added_Content_OutFirstRunNoDash 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup FirstRun #x0000000000000000 OCW_Added_Content_UP
+
OCW_Added_Content_OutFirstRunWithDash 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup First-Run #x0000000000000000 OCW_Added_Content_UP
+
OCW_Added_Content_OutImportPrf 1 Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup ImportPRF [INSTALLLOCATION]custom11.prf OCW_Added_Content_UP

So, you might want to double-check those registry values before you run Outlook for the first time.

I have read every article I can get my hands on. I have asked others in my
organization for help and they say It should work. Others in my organization
have done this saying "its easy" They say what I am doing should work, but
does not

Please take a look at this and see if you can help me!!!

Using the custom installation Wizard for Office 2003, I have used the
following parameters. To avoid confusion, I will tell you screen by screen.

2. \\uscpf016\installs$\MSOffice2003\STD11.MSI
3. \\uscpf016\installs$\MSOffice2003\CoosaPinesFinal. MST

Default Help building MST file with Outlook 2003 and Windows XP

Sue, where can I put the default store for users in this. I see in another
divisions prf file that they have a default store. We have two stores on our
Exchange server that the user can use. Maybe that is why the mst file is
failing b/c it doesn't know what store to use???

Just an idea??

Do I need to use a PRF file?

Quick question: Why are you using "modify profile" instead of "create new profile"?

18 Configure and Exchange Server Connection is selected
username %USERNAME%
Exchange Server : CHLCL0203 (do I need to put chlsnt002 or
chlcl0203.bowater.com?)

The Exchange server name needs to be resolvable and point to a server that is available.
