Default Sorting Contacts

I would like to separate my individual contacts from my Distribution lists
via a sort. I've tried 'view-current view-customize current view- and
poked around there with no success.

Distribution Lists don't contain contacts, then contain alphabetically sorted
lists of name/address pairs.

If I understand your post, why don't you try using Categories. I use
Categories to brake down my contacts into groups like Friends, Family, etc.

click on the icon if displayed on the left in your view to sort
