I have my main address book, derived from my contact list, in surname - first
name order. However names in distribution lists always appear first name -
surname order. How can I change this?

I don't believe you can. The DL will list the members using the "Display
As" field from the contact, not the File As field.

This seems a strange approach. If you want to review a distribution list to
ensure all names are on it, you would most likely use the exact same method
you use for your contact list, last name first. Yet the Display name is most
often selected by the person who sent you their e-mail address. When you add
it to your contacts list, the display name most frequently shows up first
name first. So why would Outlook choose to use the display name over the
'file as' that we request?

Some of us don't consider this a glitch. Set your Display As fields so that
they appear inthe DL in the order you want.

remain in the order in which you added them? I am trying to set up a
distribution list where the names appear in the order of the individuals
"importance". For example...making a list of Board members in order of
chairman, vice chairman, etc. I have been unable to have it do anything but
automatically resort the members by the person's first name. Very
frustrating....
