Default comma in names

I am putting together a very informal contact list.
When I enter the name Mary Ellen or Rose Marie or Billy Bob, it
registers in the contact list as Ellen, Mary or Marie, Rose or Bob,
Billy.
I can force the name to be in the right order by typing it in in the
wrong order, such as Ellen Mary or Marie Rose or Bob Billy, but how do
I prevent the darned comma from inserting itself.

Thanks for you help
Joanne
