Default Can I send email to a contact that is not in my address book?

I keep getting the error - Does not recognize one or more names. This
happens with every email address I try that is not in my address book.

Outlook has no requirement for addresses you enter to be in your Contacts
folder. Can you give an example? At exactly what point do you see this
message?

It happens when I hit send, with any address that is not in the book. Also,
I can't even enter myself as a new contact - it doesn't recognize/erases my
own email address when I try to add myself as a contact.

Do the addresses get underlined when you tab or click out of the recipient
field? What version of Outlook? What type of account?
