Default Another "The Address List Could Not Be Displayed" Question

I've seen a threat or two addressing this concern, and I've consulted Outlook
Help. I must be missing something. Below is blow-by-blow account of all the
steps I've taken, most of which have come from site MVPs.

************************************************** **********

First I tried this:

In the Navigation Pane (Navigation Pane: The column on the left side of the
Outlook window that includes panes such as Shortcuts or Mail and the
shortcuts or folders within each pane. Click a folder to show the items in
the folder.) javascript:AppendPopup(this,'olnavigationpane_1') , click
Contacts. Under My Contacts, right-click the Contacts folder you want to view
in the address book, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. Click
the Outlook Address Book tab, and make sure that the Show this folder as an
e-mail address book check box is selected. If the check box is unavailable,
you need to add the Outlook Address Book to your profile.
It didn't work. Then I tried this:
For Outlook 2002/2003: Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email
address book. Right click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook
Address Book. Is the box to enable as email address book checked? If this is
grayed out...Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing
directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't
listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it
and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

This was vague, so I tried this:

1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts. 2. Click to select View or
change existing directories or address books, and then click Next. 3. If your
Outlook Address Book is listed, click Cancel, and then go to the steps in the
"How to Mark Your Contact Folder for Use with Your Address Book" section.

My Outlook Address Book was listed, so I did this:

1. In the Folder List, click to select the folder you would like to use with
the Address Book. If you do not see the Folder List, click Folder List on the
View menu.
(Actually, the folder list is under the "Go" menu)

Then I tried this:

2. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Properties for your
folder name. 3. On the Outlook Address Book tab, click to select Show this
folder as an e-mail address book, type a descriptive name, and then click OK.

which I'd already done and didn't work this time. I'm going in circles here.

What am I missing?
