catagories don't show up in contacts

Outlook-2003 When I choose categories, all I get is a phone list,--no catagories. Normally when I am in contacts I am in "address cards" in the current view window. I have my contact designation with a yearly catogory, that is this contact did business with me in 2006--that contact was in 2003, that one did business with me in 2007. When I choose the catagories view, all that comes up is the Phone list.
