how do I sync a single category of contacts

I have 5 contact categories and only one will sync into my Treo; how can I do
all of them when some contacts are not in the master contact

Synching is the province of your Phone/PDA/Smartphone. Ask the manufacturer if they support synching non-default folders. Or you can use third party software (Pocketmirror comes to mind) to accomplish this. You can also ask in microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync as many others have asked the same question and have gotten referrals to other software that will help.
