Default Instant Search for Contacts stopped Working

I use Outlook 2007 with business contacts installed with XP Professional
Service Pack 2. Yesterday my contacts using instant search quit working.
The magnifying glass icon disappeared from the lower right corner where the
date/time are displayed. I have the book Outlook 2007 Inside Out and have
found no help, I have used the online help and now I am resorting to this
note. I hope there is someone who can help me with clear, understandable
questions and answers. I am not an expert. Now when I type a name in the
instant search area I get the message "Instant Search encountered a problem
while trying to display search results. Modifying your query may resolve
this problem." I only use the instant search in the contacts section of
Outlook. There is no query to modify, I just type in the name and it used to
go right to that business card. I appreciate your time and assistance.
Sincerely, Michael

Default Instant Search for Contacts stopped Working

Hi Russ,

First Merry Christmas, I hope yours and your familys was a happy one. I am
sorry it has taken so long for me to reply, but I am being watched and
treated for three different types of cancer. Not much fun and I am in and
out of the hospital so it takes a little more time to respond.

I followed the instructions and discovered two different things. When I
went to the control panel, indexing and advanced it told me that indexing was
not on. I also tried tools, check the indexing status and it tells me that
Outlook is currently indexing your items with 296 items remaining in Personal
Folders and 336 items remaining across all open mailboxes.

When I go to search options all fields in Indexing, Search, Deleted Items,
Instant Search Pane are blank even though I have checked the ones I want. In
Indexing the only box available is Personal Folders. When I check them and
click ok I get this error message "A problem was encountered while trying to
change which data files to index. Some of those changes may have not been
saved." When I go back to check none of them have been saved. I do not know
what I have done. I use the instant search for finding my contacts and it
used to work beautifully.

Thank you for your time and expertise. I am looking forward to trying
whatever you suggest in hopes that I will again be able to use the instant
search feature.

Sincerely, Michael

Same problem, the .pst had some errors and the correction software fixed
those.
When I went to the control panel, indexing the same error in that it gave me
no choices and said indexing was not running. When I went to tools the same
problem in that no selections would remain. I checked what I needed to have
indexed, etc. and closed the selections. When I opened it up no selections
that I had made took, everything was blank. I wish I knew what I had done.
Again, thank you for your considerable time, sincerely, Michael

But did you rebuild the Index from Control Panel with Outlook closed?
