Default Numbers in an email address

I have an odd thing happening.
A friend of mine has an email address with numbers in it. An example is:
"
I get his email, however the numbers are missing. It just says
"
If I try and reply, the email address doesnt exist because the numbers are
missing.
I get other emails with numbers in them just fine. Is it something on his end?
Thanks
