I have jsut done a reload of XP.I have ended up with two separate "contacts"l
ists in the navigation panel and also a slightly different address book. I
think tjis is because I imported and old list as well as the current one.

I don't understand the difference between address book and contacts list and
the address book in the toolbar is not showing contacts.

How do I mergre the two contacts lists I have come up with without creating
duplicate entries and to give just one "contacts" both in the navigation
panel and which is the one that will be use for auto complete of addresses?

Presumably you used the Import function in Outlook? As posted in all the
Outlook groups quite often more than once a day, import is NOT the way
to move data from one Outlook to another.
The easiest answer to your problem is to create a new Mail profile
(importing a pst quite often corrupts mail profiles, by going to Control
Panel-Mail-Show Profiles-Add, and after creating it, in the same place
under Data files, connect the existing pst to it.
