I have recently had to reformat my computer, re-install Office 2003 and
restore Outlook info from pfback.
In my contacts I had a number of Distribution Groups and while they are
still there when I try to send a message to any of these groups I get the
error message:
5.1.1 - Bad destination email address 'invalid domain "": no dot found'
Also instead of being SMTP email types they are MAPIPDL.
Can anyone let me know why since formatting and reinstalling Office I now
have this problem with my Distribution lists.

Depends on how you migrated your data. DL's only survive if you do it
correctly. "Restore from pfbackup" tells us nothing.

I used the following program to backup all of my outlook data (excluding
mail accounts which I had to setup manually).

Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

It's the microsoft add in for backing up the .PST files.

This included the backing up of all my contacts and also distribution lists.

When I restored my data to outlook and setup the mail accounts separately
everything seemed to work. The only problem I had that was my saved
distribution lists would no longer send through the e-mails.

I tried to setup new distribution lists, but these also failed with the same
error message.

I'm not very advanced in Microsoft Outlook, but I think the main problem
seems to be that when I open my address book, the distribution lists appear
as MAPIPDL instead of SMTP (as do the individual contacts).

This is about all of the information I can muster together unless you can
ask some specific questions about the process

Exactly how did you connect your Outlook profile to your backed up file?
Whatever you did trashed your DL's.

Hi Russ

Putting the back up issue aside for the time being; what I am having
difficulty in understanding is that when I set up a new distribution list in
"contacts" the same error message occurred when I tried to send an email. Can
you suggest a solution to that problem?

As far as the backup issue the data was imported under the .pst option
within the backup add in.

The backup issue is important. There is no automated way to restore Outlook
that works. They corrupt your profile.
The only supported method for migrating Outlook data is to open the file in
the new Outlook profile.
You need to start by creating a new Outlook profile and migrating your data
correctly using the methods we post he

Note that some of the information on the Microsoft page is outdated and
contains errors, particularly when applied to Outlook 2003 or 2007.
Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location to
connect it to your profile. Doing so will often corrupt your Outlook
profile. Copy it
anywhere BUT the default location and then open it within your Outlook
profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become
too deeply flawed to be of any use.
