Hi Bruce,
Well, I did as you recommended. I now have a working INBOX and am able to
download mail on a regular basis. I don't yet know how to retrieve the old
e-mails though.

I did not do the compacting. this just happened??? Like you recommended, I
checked the Recycle Bin. The file is not there. It is still in C:Documents
and Settings\user\local...

They just disappeared. I had a large inbox, about 2 gig worth of mail from
the last year. I wanted to archive it and clean it up but it just
disappeared. I can go to the file where it is stored...
