Have you done a defrag since you updated to XP ? Upgrading to newer version
of the operating system has a habit of fragmenting hd's all to hell and
sometimes even requiring adding RAM.

The 'Inbox' folder also may be corrupted so if disabling av email scanning
doesn't go the trick you may have to do the same thing as you did to the
'Sent' folder.

It sounds like the user's Inbox has become corrupted somehow and should be
deleted while empty and let OE rebuild an Inbox next time it is started.
