Out of memory messages can occur when there is a corrupted file and
processing goes round and round demanding ever more memory to complete
the process. Given you are downloading mail to your inbox...

If only newsgroups are compacted it would seem you are selecting Tools,
Options, Maintenance. CleanUp Now, Compact. That is not what Bruce was
recommending.
